If you're looking for something the whole family can enjoy this summer, consider Casa Manana's latest Broadway offering: Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. The show is certainly cool enough to venture into the heat outside. With free parking in Sundance Square, this production, being performed at Bass Performance Hall (through July 29) is sure to be a crowd-pleaser.

Joseph in its various forms has been around since the late '60s when it was no more than a series of brief sketches and songs by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice written for a local school. It was workshopped and tweaked in all its incarnations into the current version.

Joseph is one of the most popular musical titles in performance today, a favorite of churches, schools, colleges, and community theaters, and for good reason. The plot is based on the Biblical story of Joseph from the book of Genesis. While not a religious show in message or tone, the snappy Sunday School storytelling reinforces the values of forgiveness and faith, and glosses over the dirty stuff as quickly as possible. Sure, the brothers conspire to kill Joseph and deceive their father, Potiphar's wife tries to seduce him, and don't forget the executions and slavery. But don't worry, everything has been sanitized and sugar coated to avoid all controversy, which is what makes it a sure-fire moneymaker.

Like other Webber shows, the songs are in various musical styles country, calypso, rock, disco, and more. The framework for this show centers on a narrator who is reading the story of Joseph to a group of children, who function as a youth chorus as well. Joseph comes to life, and the story gets acted before us. Joseph's brothers and wives make up the chorus and double on most of the remaining roles on the piece.

Sean Palmer plays the title character of Joseph. Palmer has a lovely voice and navigates the score with ease. If anything, he seems to be holding back. Hunky and confident, Palmer's Joseph is a more serious one, which kicks up the dramatic side of the story a notch. This pays off quite well in "Close Every Door."

The Narrator was played by Sarah Litzsinger. Litzsinger's voice rings through the hall with clarity as she ushers us from chapter to chapter in Joseph's life. Often surrounded by the children's chorus, she works well with them, and easily transitions into the scenes with adults to provide the necessary commentary. When given goofy bits of shtick, she executes it with ease. Litzsinger holds the show together, our guide and emotional barometer.

Pharaoh, a humorous wink at Elvis Presley, is in the capable hands of Manley Pope. Pope does a great tribute to the King in both body and voice in his single potentially show-stealing scene. Brian Mathis plays the dual roles of Potiphar and Jacob. Mathis doesn't have much to do as Jacob, but does manage to pull the heartstrings and keep a straight face when Jacob's brothers have a celebratory hoe-down after Joseph's "death." He has much more fun as the Donald Trumpesque Potiphar and pulls it off with flare.
